Mary Mary Says Young People No Longer Have Respect for Elders

You are not the only one noticing how children no longer have respect for their elders. Erica Campbell and Tina Campbell, the Grammy Award winning women behind Mary Mary, notice it too. In their recent Essence magazine chat, Erica says:

“I remember when respect was given to elders without question, when a young woman struggling  with groceries and a child could depend on someone giving her a hand…today younger folk look out only for themselves! Whether it’s a seat on a bus or the line at the grocery store, respect and general kindness, just saying hello to a stranger, is almost extinct.”
The sisters say that we cannot hold the youth wholly accountable for their actions, however. They say a general lack of care for our fellow neighbor is to blame.
“Somewhere along the way, [people] stopped caring for each other…We’re moving so fast we don’t have time to make friends just for the sake of being friends. These days, we make friends because of what they can bring to your life…networking. We’re just trying get followers on Twitter or get more friends on Facebook without ever caring about any of those people.”
These artists then proceeded to tell of the unforgettable words Neil Diamond shared with them when they had the opportunity to meet him and inquire of his most valuable piece of advice. He told them that making friends comes before making money but that the money will follow. Tina and Erica, who also believe this to be true, say that they want to shake hands with people, show kindness, and look for nothing in return. They concluded their Essence chat by saying, “…time, love, and energy is priceless” ; even if you do not have money to make big donations, the latter is always of greater value.
